Howl From Beyond The Fog Nebula

Monster Apperances: Nebula

The kaiju genre is no stranger to experimentation, but Howl From Beyond the Fog stands out as one of the most unique Kaiju films in recent memory. Released in 2019, this short film blends classic tokusatsu effects with an unexpected creative choice all of the human characters are portrayed using marionette puppets. The result is an unforgettable film that feels like traditional Japanese theater and while still firmly rooted in traditional kaiju storytelling.

Set during feudal Japan, the film introduces a kaiju known as Nebula, placing the prehistoric creature within a folklore like story. The combination of practical effects, period atmosphere, and puppetry gives Howl From Beyond the Fog a distinct identity that sets it apart from more conventional kaiju films.

For longtime fans of tokusatsu and practical effects, this film feels like a reminder of how flexible and imaginative this genre can be when creators are given the freedom to fully bring their visions to life.

We further discuss Howl From Beyond the Fog in our full video review, breaking down its visual style, creature design, and why it remains such a truly unforgettable film, especially as it was the very first film we ever reviewed on the channel, all those years ago in episode 1 of our show!
