Origins Of The Maserdon

As we approached our first major milestone of 1,000 YouTube subscribers, we realized the Maser Squad needed a mascot, a symbol that embodies our love for the Kaiju and Tokusatsu genres. The result is Maserdon, brought to life with the help of Indonesia-based artist Wawan_Studio, blending iconic Kaiju traits with futuristic mech weaponry.

The Maserdon is a perfect fusion of classic Kaiju inspiration and original mech innovation. Each mod and weapon carries its own lore tied to iconic battles and monsters, making the mascot more than a symbol, it’s a collection of Kaiju history with a story.

The Maserdon is more than just a mascot it embodies the heart of our fandom, paying tribute to classic monsters, epic battles, and the thrill of Kaiju action! It also serves as a creative canvas for our community’s artists, bringing diverse interpretations to life in the Maserdon Hangar. Together, we celebrate artistry, imagination, and the vibrant spirit that fuels the Maser Squad.

The Maserdon Design

Base Design
  • Inspired by Gamera Kaiju Jiger retains Jiger’s tusks.

  • Head modification: Large horn replaced with MBT-MB92 Maser Cannon, historically used by the JSDF against Godzilla during the Heisei Era (battles with Biollante, King Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla, and Destoroyah).

Guiron Mods
  • Tail design inspired by Guiron’s blade head.

  • Integrated shuriken launcher in the tail.

  • Additional shuriken launchers on both sides of the head.

Head Arsenal
  • Rocket launchers mounted in the mouth.

  • Triceratops Zord-like frill providing extra shielding for back-mounted weapons.

Back-Mounted Weapons
  • Type-66 Maser Cannon (usually front-facing) the first weapon to utilize Maser Beam technology, inspired by the Markalite & Atomic Heat Gun and historically used against the Gargantua.

  • CLT-95 Maser Cannon (rear-facing) delivers subzero freezing blasts capable of turning Kaiju to ice.

  • Both cannons are mounted on a rotating base, allowing them to switch positions. The Type-66 typically serves as Maserdon’s primary offensive weapon.

Maserdon Frankie B Washington.jpg
Comic Creator Artist

Frankie B. Washington

Frankie B. Washington was the very first artist to tackle our Maserdon, and he surprised us with this incredible. It just showed up in the mail one day along with a bunch of other goodies. He created this out of the kindness of his heart, which is exactly makes him one of our favorite friends and artist in the community. You will not find a kinder artist!

Highlights:

One of the standout features of Frankie's rendition is the rocket cannons in the Maserdon's mouth. Adding a blaster to the mouth was something we had envisioned, but it was just too small of a detail to include in a logo, so seeing Frankie add it on his own was amazing. Another notable detail is the intricate gears and joints throughout its body, a very nice touch of detail that helps bring this interpretation to life.

Artist

Tanner Wright

We have been following Tanner Wrights art career for several years now and have watched him grow and sharpen his skills from creating fun fan art to providing cover art for one of our favorite indie comic series, Territory. When Tanner opened commissions shortly after we unveiled our Maserdon, Frank jumped at the opportunity to have Tanner create his own interpretation of the Maserdon.

Highlights:

The final result of Tanner's Maserdon is fantastic! Set in a smoky, purple, neon lit environment, the Maserdon lets out a roar, revealing the rockery canons hidden in its mouth! The piece makes us feel like our Maserdon is gearing up for a tense nighttime battle in a glowing, neon-drenched city.

Artist

Lizard King Productions

Lizard King Productions the artist behind the original Kaiju King Teronos was the second commission the Squad enlisted. This time it was Dan who sought out this piece and Lizard King Productions absolutely delivered with a fantastic interpretation of the Maserdon.

Highlights:

The lightning effected and platform immediately bring us back to the summoning of the Dinozords in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The attention to specific detail is incredible, especially when it comes to elements we specifically mentioned in our conversation with Lizard King Productions. This interepretation is the first = to accurately place the shuriken launcher on the Maserdon's head as we envisioned it. While it is visible in our logo, it's often mistaken for an ear port, so seeing it realized as a shuriken launcher was a huge win.

The added rivets on the body and blue accent colors on the Maser Canon assemblies are another great touch, strongly evoking aspects of the Showa Mechagodzilla design. Theat influence was always something we wanted to hint at, but only so much can translate through a logo alone.

A final standout detail is the rounded pivot gear on the tail where the blade is mounted. While that spot would normally house another shuriken launcher, this creative change gives the piece a unique original flair from Lizard King Productions.

Artist

Tyler Marcelo

Tyler Marcelo (KuddlyArt) is an artist that we recently started following after Dan discovered his work while searching for artist to feature in our Sketch Card Saturday segments, where we spotlight one-of-a-kind sketch cards from talented creators in the community. Dan commissioned several cards from tyler and later invited him to take on a full-size piece featuring the Maserdon and the result quickly became one of our favorite interpretations to date.

Highlights:

This depiction truly captures how we've always envisioned the Maserdon's head design. Tyler added the detailed rivets  throughout the piece while also maintianing the blue accents previously introduced by Lizard King Productions. It's incredibly rewarding to see how each new Maserdon comissionsbuuilds upon the last, giving artist more visual references to work from and allowing the Maserdon to evolve and become more refined with every new interpretation.
