This episode starts off with an officer walking down the street when an earthquake suddenly hits, and he’s killed by falling debris. It turns out the “earthquake” was actually caused by the underground movement of the roots of a giant flower. In this episode, the creature is called the “Mammoth Flower,” but Ultra Series fans will recognize it as Juran.
The giant plant’s roots start causing chaos all over the city, grabbing people, wrapping around them, and draining their blood with the thorns covering each root. When the team tries to fight back, the flower spits poisonous pollen into the air, putting several men in the hospital. Even though Juran is technically just a plant, it grew so massive and out of control that it became a serious threat and had to be stopped. In the end, Juran is killed by burning its roots with flamethrowers, and a plant-killer toxin is dropped from a plane directly onto the flower. The plant starts dying immediately, and the city is safe once again.
As for the episode itself, I’d say it’s one of the weaker ones in Ultra Q so far. I still enjoyed it, but it felt a little bland to me Juran is basically just a giant plant doing giant plant things. It didn’t feel much like a monster, even though it did cause plenty of damage. The story is very straightforward: giant plant appears, and it gets taken out by the two things that kill any plant fire and poison. But like I’ve said before, Ultra Q is still a great series overall, so definitely check it out if you haven’t seen it yet.
