The Meg

Monster Apperances: Giant Squid, Megalodon

We reviewed The Meg (2018), starring Jason Statham and based on Steve Alten’s 1997 novel, a book that would go on to launch a long-running series of stories, including seven sequels, a prequel, and multiple spin-offs that are still ongoing.

Packed with Jaws easter eggs and loaded with over-the-top giant shark action, this completely bonkers movie was an absolute blast to see in theaters. The Meg stands as one of the most entertaining shark movies to hit the big screen in decades. While audiences were divided upon its release, we’re firmly in the camp that this is just a straight-up fun popcorn flick.

When we first saw The Meg back in 2018, we walked out of the theater thoroughly entertained, with one thought stuck in our heads: this movie had no business being as good as it was. Years later, giving it a re-watch, that feeling still holds up. The film remains a wildly enjoyable sci-fi adventure, blending creature-feature thrills with blockbuster energy.

Is it realistic? Absolutely not. Is it self-aware, fast-paced, and ridiculously entertaining? Absolutely.

Between Jason Statham doing what he does best as an action hero, a massive prehistoric shark tearing through the ocean, and nods to classic shark movies like Jaws, The Meg succeeds by embracing exactly what it is: a fun, over-the-top shark romp. If you’re looking for the perfect summer escape movie, this one still delivers.
