Monster Appearances: Ganimes, Gezora, Kamoebas
As part of our summer beach party series from 2022 we reviewed the 1970 Toho kaiju classic Space Amoeba (also known as Yog, Monster From Space), directed by the legendary Ishirō Honda.
The film follows the chaos unleashed when an extraterrestrial amoeba possesses the animals native to a tropical island, the intended site of a new hotel, creating a triple threat of monster destruction. True to Showa-era kaiju style, the monsters take center stage, with dynamic suit work and impressive practical effects that make each rampage thrilling to watch.
While the story has its quirks, including a few predictable plot points and underdeveloped human characters, this actually works in the film’s favor, allowing viewers to focus on the monster action. The combination of monster mayhem, practical effects, and classic Toho charm makes Space Amoeba a standout for non-Godzilla Kaiju film.
