Gorosaurus vs Kumonga

Today I’m covering the Kaiju War Chronicle story “Gorosaurus vs Kumonga” by James Webster —and I’ve got to say, this one genuinely surprised me! It’s a short but intense battle with an unexpected ending, and it gave some long-overdue spotlight to one of the most underrated Kaiju in Toho history: Gorosaurus.

The fight kicks off with Kumonga wandering across Monster Island, minding his own business, when Gorosaurus suddenly charges in and launches a relentless assault. From the start, it’s completely one-sided — Gorosaurus dominates, stomping, jumping, and slamming Kumonga over and over again.

But just when it seems like Gorosaurus is about to deliver the final blow, Kumonga lands a desperate counterattack. In one lucky move, two of his legs stab deep into Gorosaurus’ thigh, causing massive bleeding. The injury is too severe for Gorosaurus to stay standing. He collapses, exhausted and bleeding out.

Sensing his chance, Kumonga covers Gorosaurus in layer after layer of webbing, trapping him completely. Hours later, as Gorosaurus lies motionless, Kumonga delivers a venomous sting finishing the mighty dinosaur once and for all. The victor: Kumonga, against all odds.

My Thoughts

I really enjoyed this story. The pacing was great — it starts out making you think Gorosaurus has total control, only to flip the outcome at the very end. It’s like watching a boxing match where the underdog lands one perfect shot and turns everything around.

What makes it even better is the spotlight on Gorosaurus, a Kaiju who’s rarely seen outside of King Kong Escapes and Destroy All Monsters. He’s always felt like one of those monsters who deserved more screen time maybe even a cameo in Final Wars!

Even though Gorosaurus met a rough end here, it was awesome to see him featured again, and the writing made both Kaiju feel fierce and alive.

This was a strong entry in the Kaiju War Chronicle series — brutal, surprising, and memorable. It’s the kind of story that reminds you why we love these monsters in the first place.

Thank you for reading and keep an eye out for my next Kaiju War Chronicles review — coming soon!
