Monster Apperances: Doug, Drownviper, Godzilla, King Kong, Leafwings, Hellhawks, Mothra, Parrot Frog, Scar King, Scylla, Shimo, Suko, Warbats, Wart Dogs, Vertacine
From the opening moments, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire wastes no time pulling audiences back into the MonsterVerse, where Titans dominate the screen. Godzilla and Kong once again take center stage, but this time their uneasy alliance is pushed even further as a new threat emerges from the depths of the Hollow Earth: the Skar King and Shimo.

If there’s one thing this movie absolutely nails, it’s scale. The battles are bigger, louder, and more destructive than ever before. Cities crumble, ancient landscapes are torn apart, and the sheer power of these Titans is constantly on display. This is a film made to be experienced on the biggest screen possible.
One of the biggest highlights for us was the introduction of new Kaiju from the Hollow Earth, including the Drownviper, the flying Vertacine, Wart Dogs, Parrot Frog, Shimo, Scylla, and the various giant apes working under the Skar King. Fans of the MonsterVerse graphic novels will also appreciate seeing Tiamat finally make the jump to live action. Seeing Tiamat brought to life on the big screen was a standout moment and a great nod to the expanded MonsterVerse lore. To us, Tiamat feels like the MonsterVerse’s take on Toho’s Manda. We also saw the return of Mothra!

On the human side of the story, we see the return of Dr. Andrews, Kong’s favorite human Jia, and our favorite conspiracy theorist Bernie. The addition of Dan Stevens’ Trapper was a lot of fun, and he’s a character we’d definitely like to see return in future films or prequels. Trapper and Bernie add a strong comedic element to the movie, and we really enjoyed their dynamic. Dr. Andrews’ and Jia’s storyline focuses on the growth of their adoptive mother-daughter relationship. Despite the human elements, the focus ultimately remains where it belongs on Godzilla, Kong, and the Titans clashing in spectacular fashion.

Additionally, Kong and the new young ape, Suko, take center stage with conversations and interactions that require no actual words for us to understand what they’re saying to each other. It was really cool seeing these two interact in a way that allowed you to genuinely feel the emotions between them without any dialogue.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire succeeds by embracing what fans love most about these films. It’s loud, ridiculous in the best way, and packed with Kaiju mayhem. If you’re looking for deep narrative complexity, this may not be the entry for you but if you want to watch a giant monster mash for two hours, this movie absolutely delivers the fun.
