This issue of Godzilla: Rulers of Earth starts off with Godzilla and Anguirus heading out to sea, going their separate ways after their battle with the MechaGodzillas and Mecha-King Ghidorah. Meanwhile, Lucy from the kaiju research team finds the two mysterious twins who were working with the Cryogs knocked unconscious. When she touches them, she has a strange vision of Godzilla and several other kaiju possibly hinting that these twins are Battra’s version of the Shobijin from the earlier Godzilla comic series.
Up in orbit, the Cryogs detect a strange object approaching their ship it’s SpaceGodzilla. The Cryog commander orders the MechaGodzillas to attack, but the cold of space freezes them solid in their launch bay. With no other options, the Cryogs release Gigan. Unfortunately, Gigan doesn’t stand a chance and ends up losing one of his claws in the fight against SpaceGodzilla.
Back on Earth, Godzilla battles Ebirah in the Atlantic Ocean as two of SpaceGodzilla’s crystals crash nearby. On land, Lucy examines strange eggs that begin to crack open, revealing a claw inside. She has another vision of the twins whispering, “So it begins again…” before the issue ends on a cliffhanger.
Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #17 continues to be one of the strongest issues in the series. The story pacing, monster selection, and artwork are all top-tier. Matt Frank once again delivers incredible visuals that capture the scope of the kaiju universe perfectly. If you haven’t been following this series, now’s the time to dive in this is classic kaiju storytelling at its best.
