Genforcer: Condition Zero is Singapore’s latest tokusatsu hero task force, and we were fortunate enough to read Issue Zero, which lays the foundation for this exciting new series. Drawing clear inspiration from classic Metal Hero franchises like Space Sheriff Gavan, the Genforcer heroes don impressive, high-tech suits that immediately feel authentic, they look even more impressive in real life as they have been touring around with the real-life suits that they plan on using to film a pilot episode this year!

What makes Genforcer stand out is its grounding in real-world heroism. This team is inspired by first responders, bringing together the spirit of those who protect and serve in everyday life and elevating them into full out tokusatsu heroes. In Issue Zero, we are introduced to the core trio of Rescue Operators Husky, Collie, and Beagle. Each represents a different branch of emergency response law enforcement, paramedic services, and firefighting creating a balanced and thematically strong foundation for the team moving forward.
While the heroes’ names being tied to dog breeds and their association with different first responder roles may initially bring to mind something like a tokusatsu-inspired Paw Patrol, Genforcer, I assure you it is not! It quickly establishes itself as something far more serious and action driven.

Alongside this trio of heroes, we are also introduced to the main villain force of this series Red Horizon a mysterious organization seemingly bent on spreading chaos and terror throughout the Genforcer world. In this issue Red Horizon hijacks a train taking its passengers hostage. Red Horizon demands the release of their imprisoned leader in exchange for the hostages’ safety. Red Horizon only gives an hour for the exchange!
When the Genforcer team is mobilized one of their members Husky is nowhere to be found. Fortunately for the hostages, he is among them trapped aboard the hijacked train. Operating covertly, Husky begins taking down Red Horizon operatives one by one, until he is almost caught off guard luckily his teammates Collie and Beagle arrive just in time!

Reunited with his team Sean De Silva (Husky) shouts out "Gear Up!" and henshins into Husky. Fully assembled, the trio makes quick work of the remaining Red Horizon extremists, neutralizing the threat and saving the hostages, the Genforcer team has saved the day!
One of the aspects I really appreciate is how this series treats first responders as heroes, openly paying respect to the real-world men and women who serve in these critical roles. While not in your face it gives the series a layer of sincerity and purpose that elevates the series beyond just its suits and action.
The comic ends with a little teaser, hinting at the arrival of possibly two additional Genforcer heroes, named Chihuahua and Pug. The new duo to give of a dysfunctional energy maybe teasing some hijinks and comic relief in the next story.

Overall, Genforcer: Condition Zero Issue Zero succeeds in doing exactly what it sets out to do introduce its heroes, establish its villains, and lay the groundwork for a much larger universe. We look forward to seeing where Genforcer goes from the live action pilot to more comics we will be watching to see what Playbox Studios has planned for this series. From this issue to the impressive live action suits they have been showing off in action Genforcer is a Tokusatsu series that shows a lot of promise.
