Monster Name: Frankenstein (Frankenstein Monster)
Movie Appearances: Frankenstein Conquers the World
Frankenstein is probably one of the most famous monsters in the world a name known in almost every household even before he appeared on the big screen. This version of Frankenstein, however, is a kaiju and differs slightly from the original Frankenstein story.
This Frankenstein came into existence after the Nazis discovered the original Frankenstein’s heart and attempted to transport it to Hiroshima, Japan. Unfortunately for them, they arrived in Hiroshima the day the U.S. dropped the atomic bomb. The city was destroyed, and everyone involved with the Frankenstein heart experiment was killed but the heart survived.
Years later, the heart regenerated and grew into the Frankenstein monster. At first, Frankenstein appeared as a child, but due to the lingering radiation from the bomb, his growth accelerated until he became a giant the size of a building.
When describing the kaiju Frankenstein, I’d say he looks like a super tall man with the traditional flat-top Frankenstein head, but instead of the classic green skin, this version has a more natural skin tone. He also wears animal furs, making him resemble a giant caveman.
Frankenstein’s abilities include rapid growth and regeneration, alleged immortality due to his undying heart, and superhuman strength because of his massive size.
In Frankenstein Conquers the World, he battles Baragon in a mountain region after Baragon had been tunneling underground, destroying houses, and eating villagers. The two fought fiercely, and though Frankenstein ultimately won, both monsters were swallowed by the earth as Baragon’s tunnels collapsed. But in an alternate version released in some regions, a Giant Octopus (Oodako) rises from the water and attacks Frankenstein right after his battle with Baragon. Exhausted and still wounded, Frankenstein struggles but is ultimately dragged underwater by the Octopus, never to be seen again.
Years later, it was discovered that cells from Frankenstein’s body, shed during the battle, survived. Some were carried out to sea, while others remained in the mountains these cells eventually grew into the kaiju Sanda and Gaira, leading to the events of The War of the Gargantuas.
