About Baragon
Baragon is a monster that, like Anguirus, walks on all fours. He doesn’t really resemble any specific animal or dinosaur Baragon is his own unique, dinosaur-like creature. He’s easily recognized by his giant horn and big floppy ears, with a rugged, bumpy back that gives him a distinctive look among Toho’s kaiju lineup.
Baragon has the ability to fire a volcanic heat beam, similar to Godzilla’s radioactive breath. He also has excellent burrowing and jumping abilities, making him a fast and unpredictable opponent in battle.
Baragon first appeared in Frankenstein Conquers the World and later in Destroy All Monsters. While he didn’t appear in the Heisei era, he made a strong return in the Millennium series with Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (GMK). In GMK, Baragon plays a memorable role as one of the Guardian Monsters, though he ultimately meets his end in battle with Godzilla. He also makes a brief cameo in Godzilla: Final Wars.
My Thoughts
Like I’ve said before, the native monsters of Monster Island have always fascinated me. Baragon is one of those kaiju who’s received far less screen time than he deserves.
I only saw Frankenstein Conquers the World for the first time last year and I loved it. Honestly, I think it’s one of the most underrated monster movies ever made, for two reasons: first, because it gave us Baragon, and second, because it served as a sort of backstory to the very popular War of the Gargantuas.
Baragon, the horned, fire-breathing, burrowing kaiju, is such a fun and imaginative design. He’s got the agility of Anguirus, the power of Godzilla, and a personality all his own. How can you not like him?
