Greenmons vs Ultraman

Note: This article was originally published in 2014 on Godzilla Island all view and opinions may have since changed.

This episode starts off with a car crash. We then see some strange green goo near the wreck. The driver gets out to investigate, but a weird green, sac-like creature pops up out of nowhere and attacks. The scene cuts to a scientist in his lab looking through a microscope when the same green creature crawls under the door and attacks him too.

The Science Patrol gets word of the two murders and splits up to investigate. Hyata and the Captain check out the crash site while the others inspect the lab. At the crash, Hyata finds traces of the same strange green substance. Back at the lab, we learn that the scientist had been studying a rare plant from Miroganda Island a radioactive island.

A woman who went on that expedition recalls being attacked by a giant insectivorous plant. It turns out that the plant and the creature attacking people are one and the same — the monster known as Greenmons.

The Science Patrol fires on Greenmons with their beam guns, seemingly defeating it. But the energy only makes Greenmons grow to gigantic size. The creature emerges from the ocean and begins destroying the city. Hyata transforms into Ultraman to stop it.

Greenmons sprays Ultraman with a toxic gas that knocks him down, but Ultraman gets back up and fires his ray, igniting Greenmons. The monster bursts into flames and burns to ash, ending the threat.

This episode honestly felt weak which is disappointing because it featured two legendary Toho actors: Akihiko Hirata (Dr. Serizawa from Godzilla 1954) and Akiko Wakabayashi (the princess from Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster). Greenmons was a pretty lame kaiju design, and the “fight” was basically over in seconds. Ultraman just gets sprayed once, then sets Greenmons on fire.

To top it off, the English dub includes one bizarre scene that wasn’t dubbed at all and suddenly switches to subtitles. Overall, I’d say pass on this episode Greenmons is easily one of the weakest and ugliest kaiju in the entire series.
