Peguila in Tokyo

The episode kicks off with an airplane freezing solid mid-flight and crashing out of the sky. Then boom Peguila shows up! At the end of Episode 5, we saw this monster from Antarctica flying north, and now we finally learn its destination: Japan.

Peguila brings an unexpected ice age right in the middle of one of Tokyo’s hottest summers. The sudden deep freeze throws the city into chaos, trapping people inside frozen buildings as the monster marches through Tokyo leaving destruction everywhere. Thankfully, after their first run-in with Peguila back in Antarctica, humanity came prepared. A plane was loaded with the same chemical made from rare Antarctic moss the stuff that forced Peguila to retreat the first time.

In one of the episode’s most dramatic moments, a drunken father who’d fallen on hard times realizes his son’s life is in danger. Desperate, he steals the plane and rams it straight into Peguila’s mouth to deliver the chemical. Just like before, it isn’t enough to kill Peguila, but it does make the creature retreat once again… sparing Tokyo, at least for now.

The story here is simple, mostly because we’ve already been introduced to Peguila in Episode 5, but that works in this episode’s favor. We get a ton of Peguila action, and this stretch of Ultra Q episodes is honestly some of the best the series has to offer. Peguila was a perfect monster to bring back especially since Episode 5 teased its flight north. It’s a shame we never got a third Ultra Q episode to wrap up Peguila’s story. It would’ve been great to see what became of this icy monster.
