Monster Name: Twin Tail

Twin Tail is an ancient kaiju species that was historically preyed upon by Gudon. Its body structure is unusual Twin Tail stands upright like a worm, with its head pointed downward toward the ground. When it rises from the ocean or underground, the tail is the first thing to appear. The tail has two glowing sensory spots that resemble eyes, which often tricks people into thinking the tail is the head until its real head finally emerges. These glowing sensory spots are actually Twin Tail’s weakest point.
Twin Tail's underside is covered in sharp spikes that help it maneuver while burrowing underground. Its tail ends in two whip-like tendrils, which is how the monster gets its name—they can strike, coil, and grab enemies. Although Twin Tail is usually found underground, it is actually more of a sea creature. The first modern Twin Tail egg was discovered covered in ammonite shells, hinting at an oceanic origin. Twin Tail also has a venomous toxin spray that it can expel during battle.
The first modern Twin Tail hatched shortly after its fossil-covered egg was found. A Gudon appeared soon after naturally hunting its ancient prey. Once the egg hatched, the Twin Tail began attacking Tokyo. Ultraman Jack arrived and tried to stop it, but Gudon soon joined the fight, and the combined assault from both monsters drained Jack’s energy completely.
Twin Tail and Gudon continued battling across Tokyo until both monsters became exhausted and retreated underground. Later, Gudon resurfaced again, and MAT responded using jeeps equipped with anesthetic missile launchers. MAT managed to shoot out one of Twin Tail’s sensory spots, sending it into a frenzy. Ultraman Jack returned and pinned Twin Tail down so MAT could destroy its second sensory spot. Gudon soon reappeared, and Ultraman stepped back, letting the two ancient rivals settle their feud while MAT barraged them with gunfire and missiles. Gudon ultimately delivered a fatal bite to Twin Tail’s tail and slammed the monster to the ground, killing it. Ultraman Jack then finished off the Gudon.
Twin Tail is a very unique creature with a memorable design. I love how, when it rises from the ground, the first thing you see are those two glowing “eyes” on its tail—it creates such a cool visual trick before the real head appears. And of course, the long-standing rivalry between Twin Tail and Gudon is one of the most iconic and fun natural feuds in the Ultra series. Twin Tail has made many more appearances across the franchise, and I’ll update this post as I cover them.
