This week’s comic review is Kaiju Epic!, the crowdfunded indie comic launched on Kickstarter in 2017. Written by Tom Hutchison & Kari Castor, with art by Renato Rei & CB Zane, colors by Ceci de la Cruz, and letters by HDE, this extra-large 48-page debut issue delivers two action-packed stories depicting a full-scale kaiju uprising and the global chaos that follows. From massive destruction to international stakes, this comic perfectly captures the scope and terror of giant monsters unleashed.
On top of that, the creators offered an incredible variety of variant covers featuring work by Renato Rei, CB Zane, Rob Duenas, Samantha Sawyer, and Matt Frank, making it a comic collector’s dream.
The original plan for Kaiju Epic! was a five-issue series, with each issue featuring two stories like this debut. Unfortunately, despite a successful campaign, the series never continued. That’s a real shame the art is fantastic, and the story shows serious promise. This first issue leaves readers wanting much more from the world it sets up.
