Gudon is a two-legged underground kaiju known for relentlessly hunting Twin Tail, its ancient natural prey. Gudon has two long pincer-like horns on its head that can stab or clamp onto enemies, and its entire body is covered in sharp spikes. But Gudon’s most iconic feature is its tendril-like whip arms flexible, powerful limbs that it uses as its primary weapons. As a subterranean monster, Gudon can also burrow quickly and ambush opponents from below.

The first modern Gudon appeared shortly after a Twin Tail egg was discovered. Gudon species have hunted Twin Tails for ages, although Twin Tail is originally a sea creature, it can also live on land and burrow underground, making it an easy target for Gudon in its tunnels. After waking from a long hibernation, this Gudon began searching for the Twin Tail egg. When MAT arrived and attacked, Gudon retreated underground, only to reappear when the egg finally hatched.

Gudon and the newly emerged Twin Tail actually teamed up at first to overwhelm Ultraman Jack, draining his energy and forcing him out of the fight. Once Ultraman Jack was gone, the two kaiju turned on each other and battled until they were both exhausted and returned underground. Later, Gudon resurfaced during another fight between Ultraman Jack and Twin Tail—this time managing to kill Twin Tail before challenging Jack directly. In a one-on-one battle, however, Gudon stood no chance and was defeated by Jack’s Specium Ray.

Gudon is easily one of my favorite Ultraman monsters the whip arms are awesome, the spiked armor looks dangerous, and those huge horns give it such a cool, menacing silhouette. The ancient feud between Gudon and the Twin Tail species is one of the most fun rivalries in the Ultra series, and it never gets old seeing these two clash. I’ll update this entry as I cover more of Gudon’s later appearances.
