Gridman Universe (2023) Review

Gridman Universe (2023) serves as a massive crossover event between SSSS.Gridman and SSSS.Dynazenon, bringing both series together for a very meta conclusion. With two shows, two casts, and years of storylines to wrap up, this film had a lot to juggle in its short run-time of an hour and 58 minutes, especially when compared to having a full season to tell its story in a series.

Gridman & Dynarex

The film leans heavily into meta storytelling, rewarding longtime fans who followed both anime series, as well as both the original live action Gridman the Hyper Agent and Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad series, all four series form what we learn is the Girdman Universe (or Multi-verse to us). Seeing characters from SSSS.Gridman and SSSS.Dynazenon interact with each other is a major highlight, even if balancing such a large cast proved to be a bit challenging at times.

With so many characters and themes to address, Gridman Universe moves at a fast pace. Some moments shine, while others feel like they could have benefited from more breathing room. The Kaiju designs along with the hero & mecha mashups are spectacular just as they have been through the two-anime series. Monster and mech designs have always been a standout shinning point of the SSSS series, even when the plot sometimes felt a little too overly complicated, especially during it's more meta heavy moments. Still, the movie clearly aims to give fans a sense of closure while celebrating everything that came before.

As a conclusion, Gridman Universe is ambitious, heartfelt, and unapologetically made for fans of both series and even the original live action shows. In this video review we break down what worked, what didn’t, and whether this crossover delivers a satisfying sendoff or not.
