This year, we set out to revisit all of Mothra's standalone films, beginning with Mothra (1961) before making our way through the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy from the 1990s. It was a fun celebration of Mothra, diving back through a corner of Toho's kaiju catalog that neither of us had revisited in a very long time. In many ways, it felt like experiencing these films for the first time all over again.

One of the biggest standout elements of this film that makes it so different from previous kaiju films Toho released is that it set a new trend for them going forward. Mothra was not just another mindless monster rampaging through cities only to be killed by the armed forces at the end.
